Abstract (English) : This Embassy Lecture, titled “Intraseasonal Climate Variability and Its Impact on Society: South Africa and the Czech Republic in Partnership,” took place online via Zoom on 11 November 2025. It advanced bilateral scientific cooperation among the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), the Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS), South Africa’s Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), and the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Pretoria. The event strengthened science diplomacy, policy development, and sustainable innovation, aligning with South Africa’s 2024–2025 G20 Presidency theme of “Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability” and ASSAf’s 2025 Science20 (S20) focus on “Climate Change and Wellbeing.”
Expert presentations and a multidisciplinary panel discussion addressed key objectives: analyzing extreme events (such as heat waves, cold spells, droughts, flash floods, and compound events); assessing human health impacts; and deepening understanding of intraseasonal variability and atmospheric circulation to inform risk management and resilience strategies.
Key outcomes include a shared understanding among South African and Czech researchers and policymakers of intraseasonal climate variability, extreme events, and their health and societal impacts. The lecture promotes enhanced use of scientific evidence on short-term climate variability in planning, early warning systems, health surveillance, and disaster risk reduction in both countries. It also bolsters bilateral science diplomacy through concrete follow-up actions.
