Abstract (English) : Efforts to improve air quality in South Africa have primarily focused on reducing industrial emissions, leading to improvements in some areas; however, pollution levels remain high, especially in low-income urban areas. In response, the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) convened a Roundtable Workshop on 12 July 2024 at the CSIR International Conference Centre to explore the role of air quality (AQ) offsets as a complementary tool for air quality management, without replacing existing controls. The workshop brought together diverse stakeholders, including academia, government, industry, and civil society, to discuss the feasibility and implementation of AQ offsets. Key insights included the need for robust monitoring systems, early community engagement, incentivised approaches over punitive ones, and standardised methods to assess health benefits. The proceedings report captures these discussions and aligns with ASSAf’s mission to promote scientific thinking and provide evidence-based advice on matters of public interest.
