Abstract (English) : Men in both high- and low-income settings frequently exhibit reluctance to seek mental health care, largely due to entrenched masculinity norms that shape behaviour, attitudes, and emotional expression. Traditional ideals valuing strength, independence, and emotional restraint often discourage vulnerability and help-seeking, contributing globally to higher male suicide rates. In South Africa, male suicide rates are approximately five times higher than those of women.
This webinar examined how masculinity norms influence men’s mental health and willingness to access care, with a focus on the South African context. Key areas of discussion included the impact of traditional and evolving masculinity norms on mental health and help-seeking behaviours, cultural, social, and economic barriers to mental health service utilisation, and effective gender-sensitive approaches to support emotional well-being and resilience in men across different life stages. The insights highlight the importance of addressing societal norms in mental health interventions targeting men.
