More Detail
Abstract (English) : Access to clean water and proper sanitation is a basic human right in South Africa, yet delivering and maintaining these services requires sustainable funding. Municipalities face the challenge of ensuring affordability for households, many of whom live in poverty, while generating sufficient revenue to maintain and expand infrastructure. ASSAf, through its Forum on Water and Sanitation, is hosting a webinar to explore critical questions related to the sustainability, affordability, and equity of water and sanitation service delivery in South Africa.
Objectives of the webinar:
• Examine the methods by which municipalities generate revenues.
•Assess revenue enhancement strategies, examining their effectiveness and associated challenges.
•Examine the role of Free Basic Services and Indigent Support Policy amid high poverty and unemployment.
•Assess if social support mechanisms improve financial sustainability or deepen dependency.
•Explore privatising water and sanitation services as a viable solution through science diplomacy.
