Abstract (English) : This statement by the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) responds to the withdrawal of the Draft National Policy on Artificial Intelligence and reflects on its implications for evidence-informed policymaking and responsible AI governance. The statement highlights the importance of transparency, human oversight, evidence integrity, accountability, and public trust in the use of AI within policy processes. It further emphasises the need for AI literacy, coordination across sectors, and inclusive approaches that recognise African knowledge systems, local contexts, and epistemic justice. Through this statement, ASSAf seeks to contribute independent, science-based perspectives to ongoing national discussions on AI governance and responsible AI use in South Africa.
